Sinopsis

Tras un parto violento y una separación reciente, Violeta, fotógrafa y directora de la película, atraviesa un momento de quiebre en su maternidad. La mirada hacia su propia madre la lleva a preguntarse cómo fue maternada y qué formas de ser mujer y madre le fueron transmitidas. A través del encuentro con distintas maternidades entre ellas la de María, escultora y madre trans, se abre para Violeta otra posibilidad de mirarse y de pensar su propia experiencia. 

After a violent childbirth and a recent separation, Violeta, the film’s director and a photographer, goes through a moment of rupture in her experience of motherhood. Turning her gaze toward her own mother leads her to question how she herself was mothered and what ways of being a woman and a mother were passed on to her. Through encounters with different forms of motherhood; among them María, a sculptor and trans mother, another way of seeing herself and of thinking about her own experience opens up for Violeta.  

Nací en la ciudad minera de Cerro de Pasco, crecí en Arequipa y desde los catorce años vivo en Lima; aún no sé de dónde soy. No provengo de una familia de artistas: mi padre es geólogo y mi abuelo materno proyectaba películas en la mina. Creo que mi educación visual se formó entre las trovas que escuchaba a oscuras con mi padre y las diapositivas que él tomaba a la familia y a sus rocas; una herencia que marcó mi forma de mirar el archivo y escarbar en la memoria.  

Soy comunicadora audiovisual por la PUCP, fotógrafa por Maldefoco y diplomada en Antropología Visual por el Centro de la Imagen. Mi trabajo parte de esa mirada íntima para explorar dimensiones colectivas de la identidad y el cuidado.  

A los veintiocho años me convertí en madre. Desde entonces investigo la maternidad desde la fotografía con las series Lo que vivimos (Concurso Nacional Nuestras Memorias, 2015), Nadar a oscuras viendo tu reflejo (Concurso Espacio y Tiempo, 2019) y Mirror (Lucie Foundation, 2021). Durante años materne y trabajé en dirección de arte. Tras mi segundo parto y una experiencia de violencia obstétrica, necesité revisar, desde la historia de mi madre, las violencias colectivas y estructurales que nos atraviesan. De ahí surge la urgencia de realizar este documental sobre la experiencia materna. 

 

I was born in the mining city of Cerro de Pasco, grew up in Arequipa, and have lived in Lima since I was fourteen; I still don’t know where I am from. I do not come from a family of artists: my father is a geologist and my maternal grandfather screened movies at the mine. I believe my visual education was shaped between the trova songs I listened to in the dark with my father and the slides he took of our family and his rocks; a heritage that marked the way I look at archives and dig into memory. 

I hold a degree in Audiovisual Communication from the PUCP, studied photography at Maldefoco, and have a diploma in Visual Anthropology from the Centro de la Imagen. My work stems from that intimate perspective to explore collective dimensions of identity and care. 

At twenty-eight, I became a mother. Since then, I have been researching motherhood through photography with the series Lo que vivimos (Concurso Nacional Nuestras Memorias, 2015), Nadar a oscuras viendo tu reflejo (Concurso Espacio y Tiempo, 2019), and Mirror (Lucie Foundation, 2021). 

For years, I mothered and worked in art direction. Following my second childbirth and an experience of obstetric violence, I felt the need to examine, starting from my mother’s story, the collective and structural violence that passes through us. From that arises the urgency to make this documentary about the maternal experience.»
