Cada Navidad en Penjamillo, Michoacán, el Jaripeo anual, o rodeo del centro de México, atrae a lugareños y a migrantes que regresan de los EE. UU., celebrando lo que significa ser un vaquero de Michoacán. Evoca nostalgia y refuerza las normas culturales, recordando a la diáspora ‘lo que significa ser un hombre’ en la sociedad rural mexicana.
Bajo el espectáculo del jaripeo, se desarrolla otra narrativa: toques fugaces, miradas cómplices y encuentros secretos en el bosque detrás de la arena del rodeo. Estos momentos revelan una subcultura queer oculta nacida de este entorno. El cineasta Efraín, quien creció entre Penjamillo y Riverside, California, nos guía a través de este mundo, mezclando la experiencia personal con una narrativa de múltiples capas. Se utiliza una combinación de metraje en Super8, recuerdos estilizados y un crudo verité para interrogar al mismísimo machismo que el jaripeo defiende.
Efraín conoce a nuestros otros dos protagonistas en el jaripeo de Navidad: Noé, un vaquero macho y deseable que, aunque ha salido del clóset con algunos miembros de su familia, todavía vive principalmente en secreto. Y Joseph, una diva extravagante y súper fanático del jaripeo, quien es un pilar querido de su comunidad.
Seguimos a Efraín en un viaje para reconocerse a sí mismo, mientras que sus interacciones con nuestros otros protagonistas crean retratos ricos y complejos de cada una de sus vidas.
Every Christmas in Penjamillo, Michoacán, the annual jaripeo, or central Mexican rodeo, draws locals and returning migrants from the U.S., celebrating what it means to be a cowboy from Michoacán. It evokes nostalgia and reinforces cultural norms, reminding the diaspora of «what it means to be a man» in rural Mexican society.
Beneath the jaripeo’s spectacle, another narrative unfolds: fleeting touches, knowing glances, and secretive hookups in the woods behind the rodeo arena. These moments reveal a hidden queer subculture born out of this environment. Filmmaker Efraín, who grew up between Penjamillo and Riverside, California, guides us through this world, blending personal experience with layered storytelling. A combination of Super8 footage, stylized memories, and raw verité are used to interrogate the very machismo that the jaripeo champions.
Efraín meets our two other protagonists at the Christmas jaripeo: Noé, a macho and desirable cowboy who, though out to some members of his family, still lives mostly in secret. And Joseph, a flamboyant diva and jaripeo super fan, who is a beloved pillar of his community.
We follow Efraín on a journey to recognize the self, while his interactions with our other protagonists create rich and complex portraits of each of their lives.

Efraín Mojica
Fotógrafo, cineasta y artista multidisciplinario de Michoacán, que vive en la Ciudad de México. Su trabajo se ha exhibido en galerías de todo el mundo, incluyendo Kunstverein Neukolln y MZ Galleries en Berlín, Magia Roja en Barcelona, the Factory en Seattle y, más recientemente, el Museo Tlatelolco en la Ciudad de México. El videoarte siempre ha sido una parte central de la obra de Efraín y su forma de hacer cine está fuertemente influenciada por su trabajo como artista conceptual, el cual explora la traducción e interpolación de diferentes medios: luz, sonido y materia. En el primer largometraje documental de Efraín, Jaripeo, el artista explora nuevas formas de contar estas historias humanas reales, adoptando un enfoque cinematográfico experimental y caminando sobre la línea entre lo real y el subconsciente.
Photographer, filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist from Michoacán, living in Mexico City. Their work has shown in galleries around the world including Kunstverein Neukolln and MZ Galleries in Berlin, Magia Roja in Barcelona, the Factory in Seattle and most recently Museo Tlatelolco in Mexico City. Video art has always been a central part of Efraín’s work and their filmmaking is heavily influenced by their work as a conceptual artist which explores the translation and interpolation of different mediums – light, sound, and matter. In Efraín’s first feature documentary Jaripeo, the artist explores new ways of telling these real human stories, by taking an experimental film approach and walking the line between the real and the subconscious.
Rebecca Zweig
Cineasta, periodista y poeta radicada en la Ciudad de México. Su trabajo ha sido publicado en The New York Times, The Nation y Revista Nexos, entre otros, y ha recibido el apoyo de Chicken & Egg Pictures, el Sundance Institute, SFFILM y el Points North Institute.
Es graduada del Iowa Writers’ Workshop, donde fue Teaching and Writing Fellow y Mitchell/Burgess Scholar. Su enfoque cinematográfico está moldeado por su práctica poética, la cual se centra en las cadencias y las metáforas del deseo.
Rebecca Zweig (Co-Director) is a filmmaker, journalist, and poet based in Mexico City. Her work is featured in The New York Times, The Nation, and Revista Nexos, among others, and has been supported by Chicken & Egg Pictures, the Sundance Institute, SFFILM, and the Points North Institute.
She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Teaching and Writing Fellow and a Mitchell/Burgess Scholar. Her filmmaking is shaped by her poetic practice that focuses on the cadences and metaphors of desire.
